The mother-daughter duo both looked stunning at Michael Kors runway show on Wednesday, during which Melinda, 57, wore a black, flowing dress with a big belt around her waist. Phoebe, for her part, rocked a matching cheetah-print lacy shirt and skirt combo, which left her midriff on full display. She paired the look with black, strappy heels, and a similarly-patterned jacket. The NYFW visit comes two months after Phoebe was subjected to a slew of racist abuse from trolls who criticized her for allegedly dating a black man. The University of Stanford student appeared to confirm that she was in a relationship with the mystery man in July, when she shared a few photos of herself cozying up to him on Instagram. However, dozens of people left nasty comments on the pictures, with some slamming her for being in a relationship with a person of color and others accusing him of using her for her money....read

Melinda French Gates no longer plans to give most of wealth to Gates Foundation, WSJ reports
The 57-year-old Texas-raised computer scientist made the change in late 2021 following her divorce last year from Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates, the newspaper said, citing people familiar with the matter. The couple had pledged in 2010 to give the bulk of their fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded in 2000 and spent $55 billion in its first two decades, with a focus on combating poverty, inequity and disease. A foundation spokesperson declined to comment beyond what French Gates outlined in her latest Giving Pledge letter, which she posted separately from Bill Gates.

(Reuters) -Melinda French Gates is no longer pledging to donate most of her wealth to the charitable foundation she co-founded with her former husband and will instead disburse the funds among other philanthropies, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The philanthropist also told Gayle King about her views on Jeffrey Epstein: "He was evil personified."

The billionaire philanthropist spoke at length about her 2021 divorce from Gates in a candid interview with “CBS This Morning” that aired Thursday. She said “not one thing, but many things” ultimately led to the split, and stressed that she’s looking toward a new chapter with optimism.

“It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened,” French Gates told host Gayle King. “There just came a point in time where there was enough there where I realized it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had.”

“I did not like that he’d had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no,” she said. “I made that clear to him. ... [Epstein] was abhorrent. He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterward.”

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of s*x trafficking underage girls. When contacted by CBS ahead of his ex-wife’s interview, Gates released a statement in which he called his ties to Epstein “a mistake that I regret deeply” and “a substantial error in judgement.”

Later in the interview, French Gates said she was committed to maintaining a “productive working relationship” with her former spouse. The pair share three children and remain in charge of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in the world.

(Bloomberg) -- Melinda French Gates said she’s “completely committed” to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and to working with her ex-husband a year after the pair’s divorce threw into question her role at the $70 billion philanthropic behemoth.

“We met for the first time with our board of trustees last week in person,” French Gates said in an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Emily Chang. “What I think they would all tell you is that Bill and Melinda remain completely committed to this institution and to working effectively together. And that’s what we’re doing today.”

Last year, after the pair announced their split, the foundation said French Gates might step down from her roles as co-chair and trustee if she and Bill Gates were unable to work together. If she departs, French Gates, 58, will receive money from her ex-husband for her charitable work that’s separate from the foundation’s endowment.

Gates, 66, has already transferred billions of dollars of stocks to French Gates, who’s built her own philanthropic investment firm Pivotal Ventures. Dow Jones reported in February that French Gates would increasingly give away her fortune through philanthropies other than the foundation, citing people familiar with the matter.

“I give my time equally to those two institutions,” French Gates said in the Bloomberg interview, which was pegged to the release of the foundation’s 2022 Goalkeeper’s Report. “The foundation, I’m deeply and continue to be committed to. That is my global platform. Then, with Pivotal Ventures, I’m really working on social inequities here in the United States.”

Melinda French Gates calls out 'great problem' of DC politics: 'There are too many men with seats of power still'

Melinda French Gates calls out 'great problem' of DC politics: 'There are too many men with seats of power still'
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently found the world won't reach gender equality until at least 2108, three generations behind past estimates.

Electing more women and people of color would help fix this, she told Fortune, saying, "There are too many men with seats of power still on Capitol Hill in the United States."

"We are the only industrialized country that doesn't have a robust paid family medical leave policy, and that just shouldn't be," the billionaire philanthropist said in an interview with Fortune this week. "But you have to be frank: There are too many men with seats of power still on Capitol Hill in the United States."

Though there's a record number of women in the 117th Congress, they still make up just 28% of it, according to a report from the Congressional Research Service. And though this Congress is the most racially and ethnically diverse in history, people of color make up roughly 25% of the Senate and House of Representatives, holding 136 of the 535 seats according to the report.

Earlier this week, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable organization she runs with her ex-husband and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, published a report finding the world won't achieve gender equality until at least 2108, three generations behind previous projections.

"A lot of times, we think we think we're going to get there on gender equality—that we might move the needle a little bit," French Gates told Fortune. When it comes to female representation in government, "We kick up a percentage point or two, and we think, 'Okay, we're on our way to empowerment.'"

Melinda Gates' lawyer reveals what he advises billionaires and celebrities not to do when settling a divorce

Melinda Gates' lawyer reveals what he advises billionaires and celebrities not to do when settling a divorce
Divorce attorney Robert Stephan Cohen told Insider the spouses of very wealthy people sometimes settle for much less than they could get.

Her attorney, Robert Stephan Cohen, recently sat down with Insider for an exclusive interview, speaking broadly about the complexities of a billionaire's divorce and how America's elite divide their astronomical wealth when their marriages crumble.

Occasionally, Cohen said the spouses of very wealthy people don't ask for as much money as they could and instead settle for much less. He added that if he thinks a client is about to do a deal he thinks is "egregiously bad," he'll advise them to not to take it.

"I might push them a little bit and try to get them to see the other side of it," he said. "Remember: for the unmoneyed spouse, it's likely to be the largest business deal that they'll ever do in their life. And they really need to think about it, because they may not have a second opportunity."

Some clients will find a happy medium between the extremes of accepting too little or demanding too much of their spouse, and those are the cases Cohen says he resolves fairly easily out of court.

If Cohen were to represent the wife of a man who's worth $500 million, he said it wouldn't be unusual for that client to ask him to win a settlement closer to $100 million or $115 million, rather than a full $250 million. In such a case, Cohen said he could simply call up the lawyer representing the hypothetical husband - it's a small number of elite divorce lawyers handling these cases, and they all know each other.

The Gates Foundation announced in July last year that Melinda could step down from her role as co-chair if, after two years, either she or Bill decided they could no longer continue working together. The news came a few months after the pair announced their divorce after being married for 27 years.

She earned a degree in human biology and took a year off to focus on her equestrian passion before going to medical school. She told Sidelines Magazine her childhood pediatrician inspired her to pursue medicine.

"He is super sweet, down-to-earth, easy-going, but you can also go fast and have a lot of confidence, so I am really excited about him," she told US Equestrian in November 2017.

He set about buying property in Wellington, Florida, a hot spot for wealthy equestrians. The Miami Herald reported he dropped $37 million to buy a whole string of properties near Laurene Powell Jobs' estate.

Melinda Gates: Choosing to leave Bill was my 'lowest moment'

Melinda Gates: Choosing to leave Bill was my 'lowest moment'

The billionaire philanthropist admitted that everyone has “low moments” and she is “not happy every day” in an interview with USA Today published Sunday, adding that divorce wasn’t something she “ever thought would happen” to her.

“It certainly wasn’t what I thought on the day I got married,” she said. “But I realized for myself, I needed to make a healthier choice, and that was just a very, very sad day.”

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the former couple said in a joint statement at the time.

“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

“I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that,” French Gates also told King, 67. “It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there where I realized it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had.”
