'Spider-Man: No Way Home' grosses $1.6 billion worldwide and becomes Mexico's highest-grossing film


UPDATE, writethru: In its fifth weekend, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home swung past the $900M mark at the international box office to weave a $926.3M running cume after a $33.4M session in 63 markets. The worldwide total through Sunday is an Electro-fying $1.625B.

Notably during the frame, this Spidey scaled new heights in Latin America, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in Mexico ($72M cume) and the No. 2 movie ever in Brazil ($50.4M), Central America ($12.6M) and Ecuador ($7.9M).

The Tom Holland-fronted phenom also crossed $100M globally in IMAX with an estimated $101.2M through Monday. This is only the 11th title in the company’s history to the milestone. Overseas markets make up $40.7M of the total.

Still to come are Slovakia and Norway as Peter Parker and friends eye a potential $1B overseas, sans China. Superheroes (and horror, see below) are uniting factors at cinemas and there’s not much new coming up on a global scale until Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall begins offshore rollout on February 3.

Paramount In the meantime, Paramount/Spyglass
Media’s Scream got off to a strong start at the international box office with $18M from 50 markets. On a like-for-like basis, the re-quel’s results are 23% above Scream 4 and 57% above recent horror release Halloween Kills. Combined with domestic’s (three-day) launch, the global running total is $48.6M through Sunday.

The Matt Bettinelli-Olpin/Tyler Gillett-directed return to Woodsboro landed No. 2 in the majority of its offshore openings, including the UK ($3.4M/622 locations), France ($1.8M/415), Australia ($1.5M/229), Russia ($1.3M/1,500 — biggest debut in the franchise) and Germany ($1.1M/452). The UAE opened at No. 1 with $310K from 66 sites.

Warner Bros Elsewhere, Warner Bros’
The Matrix Resurrections traveled to China this weekend, taking the No. 1 spot there (the first time for a Hollywood film since No Time To Die in October) with RMB 47.9M ($7.5M). That’s roughly on par with Blade Runner 2049. The film has a 7.5 on Maoyan which is projecting a $15M+ finish. IMAX generated $1.3M, repping over 15% of the nationwide weekend.

In 78 markets overall, Matrix grossed $11.1M to cross the century mark with $104.2M overseas. The worldwide running total is now $140M. Top hubs are Japan ($11.8M), the UK ($9.3M), Russia ($8M), China ($7.5M) and France ($7.4M).

Also debuting in China this session, Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Movie landed No. 5 with RMB 22.9M ($3.6M). Disney holdover Encanto has cumed $6.5M in the market.

Disney/20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man had a $10.2M frame in 44 overseas markets for an international cume of $63.8M and a global cume of $92.5M through Sunday. The hold was -47% versus last weekend. Russia was a No. 1 launch with $2.2M. The UK leads play at $8.7M followed by Korea ($8.2M), Japan ($7.2M), France ($5.2M) and Taiwan ($4.6M).

Sing 2 Universal Universal/Illumination’s
Sing 2 passed $200M worldwide with a running cume of $215.7M. The international total is $96.3M after an $8.4M session in 54 markets. The frame was down 50%. France has now grossed $16.6M, in line with the first film at the same point, while Russia is at $11.3M, Mexico is on par with the original at $10.8M, Australia rose to $9.8M through Sunday and Spain is at $6.7M. There are major markets still to come including Germany, the UK and Japan.

In local-language, the Disney co-produced and distributed The Last Warriror: Emissary Of Darkness has become the highest grossing title within the franchise in Russia, having grossed $28.2M to date.
