Superhero movies continued to be incredibly popular in 2021, and there were many high-profile superhero movie releases.

Whether it was a team-up or a solo adventure, superhero movies were incredibly popular in 2021. Unfortunately, 2020 did not see many superhero films being released. In fact, after Spider-Man: Far from Home hit theaters in July 2019, it took two years for another MCU film to be released.

Superhero movies continue to create excitement for the fans, and it seems as though the genre is stronger than ever. With several superhero movies set to be released in 2022, there will be no shortage of comic book films for viewers to enjoy.

7. Venom: Let There Be Carnage Crossed Over With The MCU - 6.0

After the first film's massive success, Venom returned for a sequel. Andy Serkis served as the director, and the villains of the movie were Woody Harrelson and Naomie Harris as Carnage and Shriek, respectively. The film has made over $500 million at the global box office, and a third film has already been announced.

In a mid-credits scene, Eddie is transported to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he witnesses Tom Holland's Spider-Man and J. K. Simmons's J. Jonah Jameson on a tv screen. Whether this set up anything more than a joke remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear; the Venom franchise is here to stay.

11 years after Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff was introduced to the MCU in Iron Man 2, the Black Widow finally starred in her own movie. Taking place just after Captain America: Civil War, the film sees Natasha reuniting with her family of undercover agents to take on the threat of the Taskmaster.

Black Widow is also the first film entry in Phase Four of the MCU. Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova has since returned to the role in Hawkeye, during which she attempts to kill Clint.

Similar to Guardians of the GalaxyEternals is a team-up movie with characters that have not been introduced in prior MCU films. After the return of the Deviants and the murder of Ajak, the Eternals reassemble to stop the Deviants and to prevent the earth's destruction.

Gemma Chan's Sersi leads the team on their quest, and Richard Madden's Ikaris is revealed to have killed Ajak. Eternals had a budget of $200 million and ended up generating over $400 million at the box office. Additionally, Harry Styles and Mahershala Ali make their MCU debuts as Starfox and Blade, respectively.

4. The Suicide Squad Features An New Roster Of Villains - 7.3

Acting as a semi-sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, the film sees Amanda Waller assembling a new team of criminals to complete a mission in Corto Maltese. Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and Rick Flag are the only characters from the first film to appear in the sequel.

While many members of the team are killed early in the movie, the remaining characters go up against the alien known as Starro the Conqueror. The film also sets up an HBO Max tv series based on John Cena's Peacemaker.

3. Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Tells An Intriguing MCU Origin Story - 7.5

Simu Liu stars as the title character as he faces off against his father, Xu Wenwu. Over the course of the film, Shang-Chi reunites with his sister, Xu Xialing. Shang-Chi was also joined by his friend, Katy, and Trevor Slattery, who was last seen in Iron Man 3.

In addition, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner and Brie Larson's Carol Danvers make cameo appearances during a mid-credits scene. The film received mostly positive reviews and accumulated over $430 million at the box office. It has recently been confirmed that a sequel is already in the works.

The theatrical version of the film hit theaters in 2017, but it was not until March 2021 that the director's cut of the movie was released. In order to complete the project, an additional $70 million was added to the movie's budget. The film's runtime is over 4 hours long and is the only superhero movie of 2021 that was not released in theaters.

Similar to how Avengers: Endgame concludes the Infinity Saga storyline for the MCU, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the culmination of every previous live-action Spider-Man movie. The film is the also the first movie to pass the $1 billion mark since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019.
