Behind the Scenes With Olivia Rodrigo at Her First Ever Met Gala

At last night’s Met gala, the breakout pop star opted for her boldest look yet.

When Olivia Rodrigo burst onto the scene last year with her breakout hit “Drivers License,” everyone’s attention was firmly trained on her preternatural songwriting abilities and her remarkable voice. And rightly so. Still, as she’s evolved in front of our eyes from a young, precocious, and talented singer-songwriter to a fully-fledged pop star, her style journey has also been equally joyous to witness. Just like her musical references, Rodrigo’s fashion has blossomed into something that pays a heartfelt tribute to Y2K style, from novelty tees to sequin-spangled crop tops to platform heels and everything in between.

At last night’s Met gala, though, Rodrigo went for something of a curveball, landing far outside of her usual style repertoire. Wearing a high glamour, black lace catsuit by Saint Laurent with a flamboyant feathered neckline, she marked a new and altogether edgier chapter in her fashion journey. “I think it’s really fun that I’m not wearing a dress to my first Met,” says Rodrigo in a behind-the-scenes video for Vogue. I just think it looks so rock ‘n’ roll and yet so sophisticated.” Teamed with a pair of vertiginous black heels and glittering drop earrings, it made for the night’s boldest and most exciting looks.

For Rodrigo, her choice of what to wear to the Met began and ended with her admiration for Anthony Vaccarello as a designer. “I’m just a big fan of [Vaccarello at] Saint Laurent,” continues. “Their clothes are so punk rock and yet feminine, and that’s something I always try to achieve in my fashion sense and my style in everyday life. I always think they’re pushing boundaries and doing really cool things, so I feel really lucky to get to wear them to my first Met.” The only downside to her high fashion look, it seems, was the shimmery purple manicure she applied. “I never wear long nails because you can’t play guitar with acrylic nails very well, but when I do I feel so fancy,” Rodrigo adds, before laughing. “I think after tonight I’m going to need a hamburger and fries.” Sounds like the perfect post-Met gala plan to me.
